The Roots of Living Authentically

You are not a problem that needs to be solved. It’s a radical idea in our culture, challenging the values we innately hold that we must overcome all of our painful experiences so we can be “happy.”
Survivors of sexual violence deserve fulfilling intimate relationships. It’s possible to explore our sexuality without shame blocking our fulfillment.
Transparency is the strongest foundation we can build. Like the Glasswing butterfly who uses its magnificently transparent wings as its protection, the more transparent and vulnerable we are the greater capacity we have to nurture trusting and safe connections.
Our wholeness lies in our messiness. Our willingness to cultivate a life where discomfort, unease, and the unexpected are welcome visitors is essential to leading a rich life in relationship with our past experiences, no matter how traumatic.
There’s no such thing as life beyond trauma. We can heal deeply and still have post-traumatic flare-ups; knowing how to navigate those will support a wondrous, joyful life.
Effective, open communication requires a willingness to be real. As we heal the roots of our past, our present is filled with direct and simplified connections with ourselves and others.

Our wholeness lies in our messiness.

Through her storytelling and leadership, Julie transcends popular approaches to awareness, healing, and recovery in order to give the world an honest, practical, and actionable lens through which to tend meaningfully to the personal and institutional realities of complex trauma caused by sexual assault.

A leading member and spokesperson in the landmark $243.6 million lawsuit against UCLA for the sexual assault and abuse by gynecological oncologist Dr. James Heaps, Julie has addressed the California Senate and Judiciary Committee, counseled veterans through expressive writing workshops, and advocates nationally with partners like RAINN and Planned Parenthood. Working on scales large and small, Julie speaks globally to break the stigma of sexual assault and works privately to support individuals and groups through the the process of healing and change.

“The way we talk about healing as a culture is upside-down. Life is not destined to be lived in just two modes–either living in or beyond trauma–but as a lifelong negotiation that requires transparency, tenderness, and skills to reshape one’s life. We need to embrace the ripple effects of what we have endured and use that as a path to healing.”
